Bandra West Residents Question “Unnecessary” Gutter Enlargement Work — Raise Concerns Over Wastage of Taxpayer Money

Mumbai: In Bandra West, an ongoing gutter enlargement and repair project has sparked anger among local residents, many of whom allege that the work is “unplanned, unnecessary, and a misuse of taxpayer money.” The civic activity, which began recently, has caused traffic congestion, dust pollution, and inconvenience across several busy lanes.

Residents say that the drainage system in the area was functioning normally and did not require such extensive reconstruction. Many believe that the funds could have been diverted toward more urgent issues such as potholes, road resurfacing, and pedestrian safety.

Local citizens’ groups have also raised questions about the lack of transparency, claiming that no proper public consultation was conducted before starting the project. They argue that repeated digging of the same roads suggests mismanagement and possible financial irregularities.

Several residents have demanded that the local MLA and MP provide clear explanations regarding the project’s necessity, cost, and timeline. They insist that elected representatives must ensure accountability, prevent wastage of public funds, and review whether the work is genuinely required.

Civic activists say they plan to file RTI applications to obtain detailed information about the tenders, approvals, and budget allocations related to the project.

For now, commuters and locals continue to face delays and diversions as the work progresses, with many calling on authorities to reassess the project and address concerns raised by the public.
