Varanasi: Allegations that parts of Manikarnika Ghat, one of India’s oldest and most sacred cremation grounds, have been demolished in the name of renovation have triggered widespread outrage among locals, historians, and heritage activists. Videos and photos circulating online show rubble and heavy machinery at sections of the ghat, raising fears about irreversible damage to a site of immense cultural and religious significance.

Residents and priests associated with the ghat claim that heritage structures were damaged or removed without adequate public consultation. “Manikarnika Ghat is not just a place; it’s a living heritage,” said a local priest, urging authorities to halt work until clarity is provided.

Officials, however, maintain that the ongoing work is part of a beautification and safety upgrade aimed at improving access, sanitation, and crowd management, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons. They insist that no core heritage elements are being demolished, and that conservation norms are being followed.

Heritage experts have called for greater transparency, including the release of detailed plans, heritage impact assessments, and on-ground monitoring by conservation bodies. Many have emphasized that renovation at such sites must prioritize restoration over reconstruction to preserve authenticity.

As the debate intensifies, citizens are demanding accountability and assurance that Manikarnika Ghat’s historical and spiritual character remains intact. The administration has said it will address concerns and engage with stakeholders in the coming days.
