Nalbari, Assam — Tension briefly escalated in parts of Nalbari district after Christmas decorations were allegedly vandalised, prompting swift police action. Authorities confirmed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. The accused are reportedly linked to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, though investigations are ongoing.
According to the police, decorative items and symbols put up for Christmas celebrations were damaged late at night, leading to concern among local residents. Upon receiving information, law enforcement teams reached the spot, restored order, and launched an immediate probe.
Senior police officials stated that the arrests were made based on preliminary evidence and witness statements. “We are investigating the matter thoroughly. Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of disturbing communal harmony,” a police officer said.
Local administration officials appealed for calm and peace, emphasizing that Nalbari has a history of communal coexistence. Community leaders from different faiths also urged residents not to spread rumours and to maintain harmony.
Security has been tightened in sensitive areas as a precautionary measure, while police continue to question the accused to ascertain the motive behind the vandalism.
The incident has sparked political and social reactions, with several groups demanding strict punishment for those responsible and calling for stronger steps to protect religious harmony during festivals.
