“BJP Councillor Munesh Dedha Questions Adults Sitting in Delhi Park”
— Reported by Neha Jaiswal

New Delhi: A viral video of BJP Municipal Councillor Munesh Dedha confronting a group of adults sitting in a public park in East Delhi has sparked fresh debate over moral policing and the role of elected representatives.

The footage, widely shared on social media, shows Dedha — representing the Kondli ward of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) — approaching a young couple relaxing in the park in the evening and loudly questioning why they were there. She is seen demanding that the man call his parents and threatens to involve police, saying their presence was “objectionable” and could make others uncomfortable.

In the clip, Dedha is accompanied by a small group of people and is shown checking IDs and admonishing the adults, even after they insisted they were consenting adults with family awareness of their relationship. At one point, she warns of consequences if such “behaviour” continues in the park.

Dedha defended her actions, saying she had responded to residents’ complaints that the park had become a hotspot for “anti-social activities” after sundown and that parents had raised concerns about minors and possible drug use. She claimed her visit was also to assess lighting and safety arrangements in the area.

However, the video’s release has drawn significant backlash online, with many critics calling the councillor’s conduct overreach, moral policing and misuse of authority, especially since nothing illegal was proven at the time — and questioned the ethics of recording and posting the interaction.

Supporters of Dedha, including leaders from the BJP’s Mahila Morcha, defended her, saying elected representatives have a duty to address citizens’ safety concerns and curb undesirable behaviour in public spaces.

As the controversy grows, residents and civic activists are urging clearer guidelines on public park conduct and a balanced approach that protects both community safety and individual rights in shared spaces.
