BMC Removes 200+ Illegal Hawkers in Andheri
Reported by: Neha Jaiswal

Mumbai:
In a major anti-encroachment drive, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) removed over 200 illegal hawkers from key areas of Andheri on Wednesday, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety.

The operation was carried out early in the morning with the support of Mumbai Police, targeting footpaths, road margins, and busy junctions that had been encroached upon. Civic officials said the action followed multiple complaints from residents and commuters regarding obstruction and overcrowding.

During the drive, BMC teams seized unauthorized stalls, carts, and equipment, while ensuring law and order throughout the operation. Officials stated that the action was taken as per hawking and street-vending regulations, and that notices had been issued earlier in several cases.

The drive led to temporary traffic disruptions, but authorities said the move would help create safer and clearer public spaces in the long run. Some hawkers protested the action, demanding rehabilitation and designated vending zones.

BMC has warned that strict action will continue against illegal encroachments and urged hawkers to operate only in authorized areas. The civic body said similar drives will be conducted across other parts of the city in the coming days.
